Love by definition is an intense feeling of deep affection; it's something that people feel that makes individuals go crazy. Love can be expressed in many ways, but the root of love stems from literature. As time passes generation to generation the way love is expressed in literature becomes different each time. First from poems, to orchestral pieces, stories, movies, but seen dominantly everywhere in today's world would be lyrical music (love songs). Love songs can range from different scales due to this emotion but in a sense, it all means the one simple concept. The song was written by John Legend All of Me is a classic modern love song written in 2013 that portrays the intense emotions to a special individual.
As mentioned before, love songs have a lot of influence from poems due to the deep meanings that music and poems both have. In the poems Stop all the clocks, but off the telephone written by W. H. Auden and To My Dear and Loving Husband written by Anne Bradstreet both portray love in different meanings. Auden portrays another form of love that is very somber while Bradstreet represents love in a very upbeat tone. Both poems show the emotion in different ways but both could connect to the more modern form of literature which would be the love song All of Me.
The theme connecting the poems alongside the song would be the theme of “Love in the Moment”. The theme “Love in the Moment” would qualify as dismal emotions, as well as contented/upbeat feelings depending on the time and place for love. This could be shown due to the mournful tone is shown in Auden's poem as stated, “He was my North, my South, my East and West, My working week and my Sunday rest, my noon, my midnight, my talk, my song; I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong” (Auden, 9). The “Love in the Moment” shown here would be the love this person had for the specific individual. Now individual gone from the speaker's life, so there is nothing but darkness for the speaker. The “Love in the Moment” is gone and is left empty, consumed by darkness in the poem.
The Upbeat tone shown in Bradstreet's poem is towards the husband, this jubilant tone the author shows in the poem is the “Love in the Moment” represented. As shown, “Thy love is such I can no way repay; The heavens reward thee manifold, I pray. Then while we live, in love let’s so persevere, That when we live no more we may live ever” (Bradstreet, 9). Here there is the connection with the theme due to the emotions the author is feeling towards the husband. The “Love in the Moment” is shown by the connection of love and time in the last few lines. Time would represent the amount of time one would have on life. Due to this, if time was spent with an individual for a long time, then love would have an even deeper meaning because time is valuable.
The song alongside the theme of everything connects with the two poems in a jubilant and mournful tone. The theme connects to both because it depicts both emotions from the poems in the song All of Me. “My head's under water, but I'm breathing fine, you're crazy and I'm out of my mind” would depict the sad tone because of the psychological effects that love leaves on people due to the “Love in the Moment” driving people crazy. Connecting to W.H. Auden's poem Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone, the loss of the author's peer makes the person lose love which is a sad but crazy feeling (both song and poem have the craziness). “Cause all of me loves all of you, love your curves and all your edges all your perfect imperfections. Give your all to me, I'll give my all to you, you're my end and my beginning even when I lose, I'm winning.” In this specific spot in the song, the “Love in the Moment” would be the amount of love the individual is willing to give up. Connecting to Bradstreet's poem To My Dear and Loving Husband, it gives it that that beautiful upbeat tone due to the emotions showed love being the major beautiful vibe in both as well.
The intended purpose of the poems and the song was for one reason only, the reason being when to show love and what types of love are shown during specific situations. Love is truly a beautiful thing and it is the reason why people exist. Love is the key to civilization and prosperity and unfortunately, many people throughout the history of the species haven't figured this out. Due to the connections made in the poems and the song, it's clear that love can be felt when someone is missed when one is unstable, and when one is really joyful in life. In reality, these are true situations, but love in a perfect world would be shown everywhere when the word hate does not exist
